And before that, there’s this bit where Jeffrey’s family in Vietnam have been bombed by the States. Charlie’s father rushes to help and so do the other neighbours–help Jeffrey’s father that is. But then at night, Jeffrey’s father’s garden gets torn up by these other racist people who blame him for stealing jobs. Charlie and Eliza Wishart (Laura’s younger sister) hold hands and do gross stuff with their mouths. Then Jeffrey ends up playing against a rival town’s team and he helps the Corrigan team win (he was the last batter). Jeffrey is amazing at playing cricket but the Corrigan team are super racist and never let him play. Jasper is interrogated and beat up by the police but is released.Ĭharlie has a best friend named Jeffrey Lu who’s a Vietnamese boy. Meanwhile, the whole town gets caught up in the search for Laura. Jasper thinks that the madman of the town, Jack Lionel killed her and he searches for clues. The two tie Laura’s body to a rock and drown her in the dam. Jasper takes Charlie to his little spot in the woods (or something like that) and shows him Laura Wishart’s body hanging from a rope. I’m not sure how old he is–fifteen or sixteen I think. Jasper is kind of the outcast of Corrigan (the town in Australia where this book is set) because he’s a White-Aboriginal person and is really rebellious and gets into all sorts of trouble. The book starts with Charlie Bucktin getting an unexpected visit from Jasper Jones. When Jasper Jones comes knocking at his window one night and shows him the dead body of Laura Wishart, everything changes. Charles “Charlie” Bucktin is a bookish almost-fourteen-year-old, completely devoid of any mishaps or misadventures.
